Sheriff association supports controversial guns on campus bill

BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- The Idaho Sheriff's Association has endorsed a controversial bill that would allow folks to carry guns on Idaho's college campuses.

The ISA said Wednesday in a letter to Rep. Judy Boyle that its members took an electronic vote and "the majority of the sheriffs voted in favor of the bill."

"Sheriffs strongly support the 2nd Amendment to the Idaho and U.S. Constitutions and they are committed to the safety of citizens they serve."

The National Rifle Association through its state liaison Dakota Moore also pleaded with state representatives to pass the bill.

"This important piece of legislation seeks to achieve a safer environment ..." Moore wrote.

The bill has received national attention, including the New York Times. Presidents and leaders from the state's public colleges and universities have opposed the bill as well as Boise Police Chief Mike Masterson.
