LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) Investigators in north-central Idaho are examining the death of a 47-year-old Lapwai man who was found hanging in a jail cell.

Nez Perce County deputies found Maynard Ellenwood Jr. during a routing safety check Sunday morning. Staffers with the sheriff's office told the Lewiston Tribune that the deputies attempted lifesaving techniques until a medical crew arrived. Ellenwood, who was arrested late last week on a felony drunken driving charge, was taken to a local hospital where he died several hours later.

The death is under investigation and Idaho State Police Capt. Lonnie Richardson says the investigation report should be finished next week.

It's the third apparent suicide at the jail in a little over two years.

Jail Commander Capt. Jack McGee says inmates who display signs of depression or other red flags for suicide can be placed in a cell with close supervision, but he said Ellenwood didn't display any signs of suicidal intentions.
