He will be a tennis star once he wins his first career title Ben Sheltons GQ shoot gets

Publish date: 2024-07-16

GQ” magazine thinks Ben Shelton is on his way to “superstardom” after his “big break” at the US Open.

Following his successful debut in New York, the 20-year-old left-hander received a cover photo and an in-depth interview by Kevin Nguyen for the magazine’s “GQ: Hype” arm. This was the second time in a month that the American men’s magazine has given him such treatment.

For the story titled “Ben Shelton’s Big Break,” Shelton was photographed by AF Webb and styled by Brandon Tan. He described the shoot as “pretty sick” when it was released on Thursday.

The American player describes his journey to pro tennis in the piece, and how the perspective he received from a traditional background helped him gain insight in comparison to other tennis players.

Nguyen goes on to write about Shelton’s US Open experience, concentrating on his bouts against Frances Tiafoe and Novak Djokovic.

‘Okay, I may not win this match, Shelton remembers thinking,” Nguyen writes. “’But I want this guy to know—I want the crowd to know—that I’m here to play. And that I’m going to be back.’”

Fans take a dig at Ben Shelton’s GQ photoshoot

Twitter fans could not help but mock the 20-year-old for his photoshoot. They were of the opinion that Shelton is being overhyped by the media, especially American media. GQ has already covered two articles on the young tennis player in just one month. The titles also hyped him to be the best player. The first article was titled “Ben Shelton is taking over the US Open”.

It is also important to note that despite doing well in the US Open and Australian Open, Shelton crashed out in the early stages of tournaments, including a first-round exit at the French Open and a second-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships. Many fans are criticizing the media for hyping him as he has yet to win a career title.

Here are some fans’ reactions to Shelton’s exposure:

be serious "a tennis star" he even doesnt win any major or m1000??? tennis is not juste à serve

Ben is a the biggest prick in tennis….and he did not win anything 🙄….are you guys crazy….you don't make your cover about the best tennis player in the world….you make it about a rich kid nobody like 🤔 its disgusting 🤨

Isn’t this massively premature? He has yet to win even a 250 title and he has to prove now that his Semis appearance at USO isn’t a fluke. Let’s see how consistent he is the next 12 months. Too bad the other up and coming U.S. players aren’t celebrated and encouraged as well.

Overhyped. No disrespect meant but so many on tour with better results that don’t get half the attention.

American media has decided Ben Shelton is the new “thing” until they move onto someone else.

Title of the magazine should be changed to ‘over hyped’

Reactions from the fans above on X (Twitter) say it all as they have not liked this coming from a magazine like GQ. The mentioning of ‘A Tennis Star’ has also not suited really well to the fans.
