Greta Gerwigs Barbie Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Is Everything You Want It To B
WARNING: THIS POST IS FILLED WITH “BARBIE” SPOILERS. SCROLL AT YOUR OWN RISK! ✨
After much anticipation, the Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie has finally arrived.
Leading up to the release, there were many fan theories of what the storyline was actually about. Would it turn into a horror flick midway? Was Taylor Swift making an appearance? After catching Barbie in theaters at a special preview this week, we can confirm that none of this is happening. However, we can confirm that Barbie stays light and cheery while going into heavy topics; all set to a bumpin’ soundtrack with legendary features.
The film kicks off in true Barbie fashion, as Barbie — aka Margot Robbie — glamorously wakes up from her seashell-shaped bell with her hair perfectly done. The 33-year-old walks over to her dresser and zaps on a *shocker* all pink gingham outfit, which is fully accessorized from head to toe. She then magically appears downstairs in her Dream House to eat some toast with butter in the shape of a happy face. Something to note is that Barbie is never actually seen chewing and eating, instead she just goes through the motions of eating breakfast.
Barbie then waves to all of the other Barbie and Kens in her neighborhood.
“Hi Barbie! Hi Barbie! Hi Barbie! Hi Ken! Hi Ken!” Robbie says repeatedly with Lizzo’s “Pink” playing in the background.
ICONIC.
While preparing for her big Blowout Party that will take place later that evening, Barbie accidentally interrupts a dance number by asking if anyone ever thinks about dying, which SHOCKS the Barbie and Ken party go-ers. Barbie tries to brush off her non, doll-like thoughts by dancing at her Blowout Party.
The next day, Barbie arrives at the beach to watch the Kens play some volleyball. She slips off her heels once she arrives on the sand, but immediately realizes something is wrong. Her feet are FLAT.
After falling over and crawling to the stands for some support, everyone starts thinking about Barbie’s flat feet. They connect the dots to her thoughts of death and conclude she’s a malfunctioning doll, resulting in a visit to “Weird Barbie,” who is played by Kate McKinnon.
After some hilarious one liners between Weird Barbie and Barbie, Barbie realizes what needs to be done to cure her malfunctions. She has to visit the real world and meet her owner.
Barbie’s owner is actually the one having these dark thoughts, and they are unfortunately reflecting through Margot Robbie’s Barbie, who I might add, is officially labeled as “stereotypical barbie.”
After visiting the real world, meeting her owner, saving Barbieland from turning into Ken’s Land (yes you read that right), Barbie finds herself wanting more out of life than simply being a doll. She is granted the opportunity to become human and fix all the problems women unfairly face, which is the mission of every Barbie. She is determined to make the real world an equal and better place for all women.
Between some hilarious jokes, gender-roles digs, and silly dance numbers, we believe Barbie will be a movie that is watched for the next century. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling perfectly executed the roles of tradition Barbie and Ken, making no other on-screen performance like this one.
Not only does the movie do the doll justice for her historical relevance (the slander and acceptance she has encountered), but it also reminds viewers that Barbie is not just used for pure entertainment. There are life lessons hidden in each themed doll, along with the message that children and people of all ages can be anything they want to be, just like Barbie.
You can catch Barbie in theaters beginning TODAY, July 21, 2023.
