Charlie Day is an American actor, writer, producer, and podcaster. His roles include It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, as well as the films Horrible Bosses, Pacific Rim, and The Lego Movie, and their sequels, and Going the Distance, Monsters University, Vacation, The Hollars, Fist Fight, Hotel Artemis, I Want You Back, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He also co-created It’s Always Sunny…, and Mythic Quest. He co-hosts The Always Sunny Podcast, with frequent collaborators Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney.
He was raised in Middletown, Rhode Island. His mother, Mary, was a piano teacher at The Pennfield School, and his father, Dr. Thomas Charles Day, was a professor of music history at Salve Regina University. Charlie is married to actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis, with whom he has a son.
Charlie’s family’s surname was changed from Del Giorno to Day before his father was born. Charlie’s father is of Italian and Irish ancestry. Charlie’s mother is of mostly English ancestry, with remote Irish, Welsh, French, and Scottish, roots. Many or most lines of her family have lived in the United States since the 1600s, largely in New England. Through his mother, Charlie is a Mayflower descendant.
Charlie’s paternal grandfather was Gabriel John Del Giorno/Day (the son of Armando/Armanto “Edward” Del Giorno and Margaret/Margarita Mirra). Gabriel was born in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. He was killed in a B-17 crash in Baltimore. Edward was born in Campania, Italy. Margaret was born in Pennsylvania, to Italian parents, Antonino Mirra, who was from Salerno, Campania, and Consiglia Busillo. At some point, the family’s surname was changed from Del Giorno to Day.
Charlie’s paternal grandmother was Anna E. O’Neill (the daughter of Charles Joseph O’Neill and Irene Mary C. Maloney). Anna was born in Pennsylvania. Charles was born in Pennsylvania, to Irish parents, Mathew/Matthew O’Neill and Susan Muldoon, who was from Cookstown, County Tyrone. Irene was also born in Pennsylvania, also to Irish parents, Thomas Maloney, from Ballymore, and Mary A. Gill.
